Abstract:
We are hereby reporting the results of 5 years control trials and the different strategies applied against the "hazelnut gall mite" (Phytocoptella avellanae Nal.) which represents one of the most important biotic adversities of filbert cultivations in Piedmont. The evolution in choosing compounds to be used is described; among them Barium polysulfide and sulphur dust are becoming more and more considerable owing to their good efficacy against the mite, their more favourable toxicological profile and the greater respect of natural antagonist they present in comparison with other compounds such as endosulfan. A research about the presence of Phytoseld mites, carried out in the main areas of filbert cultivations in the provinces of Cuneo and Asti, showed that Typhlodromus tiliarum Oud. is the most common species. It seems to be able to keep mite populations under the harmful threshold on grown up plants, but this aspect is worth further investigating.
