Abstract:
The concept of a computer simulation game is recommended for reducing postharvest losses and improving the quality of fresh fruits and vegetables available to consumers. Simulation games could be similar to those now available for other businesses and industries. A case is presented for viewing postharvest businesses as links in a chain for each product and using Soft Systems Methodologies for identifying the critical activities for each business (system). The vision is for a simulation game that enables players to design and manage each business in a postharvest chain. Systems thinking will be learned by players as the impacts of changes are realized in other links of the chain. Plans are described for a project to develop simulation games for mango, tomato, and onion. Presentation of this paper at the MODEL-IT symposium is intended to obtain feedback on the concept and to identify potential collaborators.
