Abstract:
Reduction in postharvest losses of 'Hayward' kiwifruit remains one of the major challenges for industry. Inherent variability between grower lines results in varied storage potential or quality of fruit and is a major contributor to storage losses. Currently industry relies on at-harvest fruit quality and previous season information to categorise poor and good storing lines. This work investigates an accelerated fruit library (AFL) technique as a rapid test methodology to segregate different lines for storage quality. Fruit samples from 20 commercially harvested and packed grower lines were separated into AFL (at 20°C) and optimal storage (at 0°C) libraries. At-harvest fruit firmness and soluble solid contents (SSC) were recorded. At 20°C fruit firmness and rot incidence was monitored at three days intervals for 27 days. At 0°C, fruit firmness was assessed at 21 days intervals for a total of 189 days. Soluble solids content of grower lines at-harvest was found to be correlated with firmness at 126 (r=0.57, P=0.008) and 168 days (r=0.61, P=0.004) at 0°C. Firmness after 12 days at 20°C was associated with firmness after 63 (r=0.66, P=0.002) and 84 days (r=0.74, PKLEINERDAN0.001) at 0°C. Meanwhile firmness after three days at 20°C was associated with firmness after 189 days at 0°C (r=-0.65, P=0.002). Rot incidence after 24 days at 20°C was associated with firmness after 126 days at 0°C (r=0.53, P=0.016). While the potential to use Accelerated Fruit Libraries to a priori indicate quality of kiwifruit grower lines after optimal storage is demonstrated here, further exploration is required before recommending application of the method within industry.
