| Abstract:
Tamarind, Tamarindus indica L., is a multipurpose tropical fruit tree used primarily for its fruits, which are eaten fresh or processed, used as a seasoning or spice, or are processed (along with the seeds) for non-food uses. The species has a wide geographical distribution in the subtropics and semiarid tropics and is cultivated in numerous regions. In this paper, we announce the release of a superior genotype of these species. Tamarindus indica ‘Andrea’ is a seedling selection from progeny grown from seed received in 1996 from Thailand. While the majority of the seedlings grown from this population produced inconsistent percent soluble sugars, this selection showed uniform high sugar content (brix) and yield. ‘Andrea’ is of smaller height than other known cultivars and it is fast-growing and has commercial potential as well as being useful as a landscape tree in USDA Hardiness Zones 9A-11 and similar geographical areas. | |
