Abstract:
The effect of two blossom thinning agents, ammonium thiosulfate (ATS) and Armothin, applied at 70% of full bloom on fruit set, yield and fruit quality of peach cultivar ‘Redhaven’ was studied in 2009 in south-west Slovenia. Each chemical was applied at two concentrations (2 and 4%), in case of Armothin (2%) the surfactant Silwet HS-312 0.5% was added as well. The application of thinning agents at both concentrations caused excessive thinning, since fruit set estimated before the time of hand thinning (35 days after full bloom) and the yield were significantly reduced compared with the control (non thinned) treatment and to the treatment that was only hand thinned. Consequently, the fruit size was increased significantly on all chemically treated trees. Addition of 0.5% Silwet HS-312 to Armothin at 2% did not have any significant effect on the thinning responses.
