MINOR TRADITIONAL GRAPEVINE CULTIVARS EXCLUSIVELY LOCATED IN WINE ZONES IN THE WEST OF CASTILLA Y LEÓN (SPAIN)

Abstract:
In recent years there has been increasing interest in identifying and preserving minority grapevine cultivars, many of which could soon disappear. Castilla y Leon has numerous wine regions in which there is a high number of minority cultivars, with very few vines and high risk of extinction, distributed in small vineyards, which makes their location and identification difficult. A thorough and comprehensive survey (962 vines, 176 plots) has been carried out over recent years (2003-2009) in the wine zones of the provinces of Leon, Palencia, Salamanca, Valladolid and Zamora (Western of Castilla y León), reaching 45 names of accessions corresponding to cultivars not previously described, according to analysis by microsatellites (801-806 International Organisation of Vine and Wine code descriptors) and whose ampelographic descrip¬tion has been made for four years in accordance with the descriptors indicated by the OIV. From these accessions, 25 are cultivars with known names while 16 cultivars are without name in their area of cultivation.
The results show the existence of 41 cultivars not previously described that are at high risk of extinction, among which, for their potential interest, we can cite ‘Estaladiña’, ‘Rio Abaixo’, ‘Tinto Jeromo’ and ‘Verdejo Serrano’. It is advisable that these cultivars are agronomically and oenologically evaluated and preserved in gene banks, to prevent the loss of the corresponding genetic variability.
