Abstract:
We evaluated the effects of supplemental early-morning lighting inside the plant canopy on the yield and fruit quality of three-truss-ordered greenhouse tomato (Solanum lycopersicum L.). Supplemental lighting was provided by 40-W fluorescent lamps positioned inside the plant canopy, with a light intensity lower than 330 μmol m-2 s-1 PPFD for 2 h around sunrise.
Our experiments were carried out in spring-summer and in fall-winter.
Yields under supplemental lighting were up to 10% higher.
Brix values of the fruit did not differ between the two treatments, but the percentages of puffy fruit and cracked fruit tended to be lower under supplemental lighting.
