Abstract:
Salvia pratensis and Salvia nemorosa were taken into consideration in the frame of a National project for the exploitation of the ornamental potential of some Italian native or naturalized species. Several seed accessions of the wild species, ornamental varieties and the hybrid S. superba Stapf. were grown in open field and observed for important ornamental traits such as height of the stem, flower colour, flower characters, length of the flowering time, branching, plant architecture and homogeneity, in order to select superior genotypes suitable for gardening and pot plant production. In spite of the general uniformity of the seed populations, 9 plants were selected for particular features such as reduced height, different flower colour intensity, and pleasant architecture. Axillary buds and immature flower scapes of selected plants were disinfected and cultured in vitro in medium containing 0.3 mg/L of benzyldadenine for proliferation. The immature flower buds were treated with 1 mg/L of the same plant growth regulator for regeneration induction. In this study, the aim of the in vitro culture is the establishment of a pool of cloned mother plants to be used for in vivo propagation which might be more economically sustainable for commercial purposes.
