Abstract:
Leaves of three year old ‘Zaozhong No.6’ loquat (Eriobotrya japonica Lindl.) were removed in summer 2004, and trees of ‘Changhong No.3’ were sprayed with gibberellin (GA3) at the same time. The flowering rate of ‘Zaozhong No.6’ was reduced by removing leaves in apical shoots on July 14. The same result was found in 200 mg L-1 GA-treated trees of ‘Changhong No.3’. We considered that the floral induction phase was July 14 to 21 in ‘Zhaozhong No.6’ and July 31 to August 7 in ‘Changhong No.3’. Based on the above results, leaves in apical shoots of ‘Zaozhong No.6’, ‘Changhong No.3’ and ‘Jiefangzhong’ were removed in the summer of 2005. Changes in carbohydrates in apical buds of the three cultivars during floral differentiation were studied. The results showed that apical buds in ‘Zaozhong No.6’ and ‘Changhong No.3’ accumulated reducing sugars at the early stage of floral initiation. Reducing sugar accumulated to a peak level and dropped to the lowest level within 7 days and then increased gradually. Same results were found in ‘Jiefangzhong’. Starch contents in the three cultivars had a descending trend during floral differentiation. Contents of total soluble sugars in ‘Changhong No.3’ and ‘Jiefangzhong’ changed slightly while those in ‘Zaozhong No.6’ changed acutely. Carbohydrate content in apical buds were different among the three cultivars, and it was higher in ‘Zaozhong No.6’ than in ‘Jiefangzhong’.
