ISHS Acta Horticulturae 615: IV International Conifer Conference

ANALYZING THE REPRODUCTIVE BIOLOGY OF TAXUS: SHOULD IT BE INCLUDED IN CONIFERALES?

Authors:   E. Anderson, J.N. Owens
Keywords:   conifer taxonomy, ovule, Taxaceae, Taxales, yew
DOI:   10.17660/ActaHortic.2003.615.22
Abstract:
Separation of Taxus and allied genera of Taxaceae as the order Taxales seems unjustified. The authors summarise a theory explaining the evolution of the ovulate structure including a primary and secondary shoot, and believe that this helps to explain many of the unusual morphological features found in Taxus. Other features such as pollination drop, pollination mechanism and non-saccate pollen are similar to their analogues in Cupressaceae and the authors consider Taxus to be a member of Coniferales.
