Abstract:
Within the framework of a national co-ordinated program supported by the Ministry for Agricultural and Forestry Policy, a trial was established to evaluate peach rootstocks in the different peach growing districts of Italy. The experimental orchards were planted in southern (Cagliari) and central Italy (Rome) with new and old rootstocks: Barrier1 (Prunus persica x P. davidiana), Ishtara (P. cerasifera x P. salicina) x (P. cerasifera x P. persica), Julior (P. insititia x P. domestica), Jaspi (P. salicina x P. spinosa), Citation (P. persica x P. salicina), PSA5, PSA6, Rubira (P. persica), GF 677 (P. persica x P. amygdalus), grafted with Suncrest peach cultivar. The data show the considerable vigour of Barrier1 and GF 677, which also have the highest cumulated yield. The peach selections PSA5 and PSA6 had higher yield efficiency and good fruit quality, confirming that they have the best performance in soils suitable for this species. Among the new rootstocks, Ishtara was the most interesting for its low vigour, good yield and commercial fruit size. Citation and Jaspi performed poorly, with the production of suckers and symptoms of graft-incompatibility. Julior showed the same vigour as Ishtara, but had lower cumulated yield and crop efficiency.
