IDENTIFICATION OF MELON ACCESSIONS RESISTANT TO GUMMY STEM BLIGHT AND GENETIC ANALYSIS OF THE RESISTANCE USING AN EFFICIENT TECHNIQUE FOR SEEDLING TEST

Abstract:
In Japan, gummy stem blight (GSB), caused by the fungus, Didymella bryoniae, is one of the most serious diseases of melon (Cucumis melo). Systematic breeding of cultivars with high resistance to GSB needs on efficient and reliable method of selecting resistant plants. Recently, we developed the ‘petiole-mediated inoculation method’ for efficient screening of melon seedlings for resistance to GSB. Results from this seedling test were highly consistent with those from field tests. By using this method, we have found highly resistant accessions in C. melo var. makuwa, var. conomon and var. agrestis. Moreover, the mode of inheritance of resistance in JMu-15, an accession of C. melo var. agrestis was studied using F1, F2 and BC1 generations from the cross between JMu-15 and a susceptible cultivar ‘Natsukei 6 gou’. The results suggest that incomplete dominant gene(s) govern the resistance.
