FLOWERING BIOLOGY, STRUCTURE OF NECTARIES AND NECTAR PRODUCTION IN TWO DICTAMNUS ALBUS L. CULTIVARS

Abstract:
In 1998-1999, flowering abundance, seasonal dynamics of flower opening, longevity of a flower, nectar production as well as the localization and structure of nectaries in two Dictamnus albus L cultivars: Rosa Purple and Albiflorus were studied in Lublin, Poland. The flowering of D. albus lasted from May 25 until June 12. Most flowers opened between the fourth and the sixth day of bloom. The longevity of one flower ranges from 5 to 7 days. The mean flower number formed per plant reached 528 (cv. Albiflorus). In the consecutive years of studies, 10 flowers of cvs Rosa Purple and Albiflorus secreted 90.3-98.6 mg and 77.8-159.8 mg of nectar, on average, respectively. The mean sugar concentration of nectar was high (43-48 %). The epimorphous nectary is placed at the base of gynophore. The height of the nectary is approx. 1200 μm and the maximum thickness of secretory tissue ranges from 230 to 260 μm. The mean number of stomata reaches 210 per 1 mm2 of the emission tissue surface.
