Abstract:
In 1998, a severe fruit drop was observed in a Persian (English) walnut cv Lara hedgerow trained orchard, located in north-eastern Italy. On husks of dropped fruit, brown patches often were present originating from the stigmatic region. Patches tended to enlarge reaching the bottom of fruit which were soft and watery. Isolations were performed from diseased fruit collected directly from walnut trees, in 1998 and 1999. Fusarium semitectumseems to be involved in the disease even though other Fusarium species can be considered as pathogenic and can play a role in the apical brown necrosis disease of walnut fruit. Fusarium spp. present in soil may be a source of inoculum. Further investigations are needed to better understand the relationship among Fusarium spp., fruit drop, and soil infestation.
