Abstract:
The comparison of old strawberry varieties (e. g.
Mieze Schindler cv.) with new ones shows that various quality parameters like shipping and storage behaviour, fruit size and shape, resistance were improved but the standard of flavour got worse.
Breeders fried to find solutions to this problem, in the sixties they introduced a totally new species, the decaploid strawberry Fragaria x vescana R.&A. BAUER. Scientific experiments with this novel genotypes led to a new population which has its genetic origin in the about 70-year old, and very favourite Mieze Schindler cv. and the decaploid Florika cv.
In total, 26 lines of this population were tested in a human-sensory program and compared with F. vesca L., Elsanta cv. and the parents, respectively.
The progenies can be assigned to three groups on the basis of the human-sensory analysis.
The results obtained for this population show that it is possible to get lines with a similar and even better, more intensive flavour than measured in Mieze Schindler cv.
