| Abstract:
A very great potential exists for developing new ultra-intensive systems of production for a whole range of tropical fruit and nut crops. From experience already gained with such crops as the apple - in temperate regions - or coffee, such new systems are likely to raise yields per unit area of land per unit time considerably over those now obtained. Ultra-intensive systems for perennial woody plants mean not only increasing plant population per unit area of land but also new management procedures. The plant characteristics which have to be investigated and understood in order to rationalise a choice of new systems are outlined. | |
