Abstract:
Ornithogalum thyrsoides is a bulbous plant indigenous to South Africa, with a commercial potential for both bulb and cut flower production.
Temperature is probably the most important single environmental factor that has an effect on flower initiation in bulbous plants.
The apical meristem is the receptive area of the temperature stimulus.
The majority of bulbous plants have a specific temperature requirement for flower initiation.
From earlier work it was reported that the flowering date of Ornithogalum thyrsoides can be manipulated by temperature treatment of the bulbs during storage and an extrapolated model to predict the flowering date was compiled.
This study was conducted to test the validity of the model and to compile a new model based on the results.
This information will enable the producer to adapt the production procedures so that flowering date will correspond with market demands.
