PINEAPPLE PRODUCTION IN NORTHERN MARTINIQUE

Author:   B. Aubéry
DOI:   10.17660/ActaHortic.1997.425.3
Abstract:
The first cannery in Martinique was built in 1906. In 1959, eight factories processed 22 000 tons. Since this date, production volume has highly fluctuated. In 1976, EEC included canned pineapple as an EEC market product, ensuring a minimum price for producers. SOCOMOR, our actual cannery created in 1959 produces cans and juices (Mont Pelé Label) mainly exported to France. In 1994, 19 000 tons of fruits were processed. The 69 SOCOMOR producers grow ‘Smooth Cayenne’ on about 550 ha. The main cultural constraints are the wilt, black spot and leathery pocket diseases, the decrease of soil fertility, the heterogeneity of planting material and the symphilids. The black spot and leathery pocket diseases induce 8 to 12% of losses depending of the year, and are studied through a general survey conducted by CIRAD. Wilt is better controlled with a mechanized treatment of planting material. Crop rotations slow down the decrease of soil fertility. The heterogeneity of planting material is reduced using a selected clone from tissue culture followed by conventional multiplication. New chemicals seem to be more efficient to control symphilids. The bulk of these technical improvements increase the productivity in Martinique.
