EXPERIENCE WITH THE BBC-YORK-AIR CONDITIONER EVX, SYSTEM DR. REICHART

Abstract:
A short description on the construction and the regulating unit of the BBC-York-air conditioner EVX, System Dr. Reichart will be given.

On the basis of the experience over the past two years, using the phytocabinet, it will be tried to answer the following questions:

  1. Which reproducibility of the controlled conditions can be held over a longer period of time?
  2. Which variation of the different conditions are detectable in the plant growth compartment?
  3. How much electric energy is consumed under differently controlled conditions?

The use of phytocabinets for the achievement of more constant and reproducible environmental conditions for experiments with plants, than nature in most cases supply, yields a row of problems. Of these the following have been selected for this report:

  1. Which constancy of controlled conditions can be held over a longer period of time?
  2. Which variation of the different conditions are detectable in the plant chamber?
  3. How much electric energy will be consumed under various conditions?

The last point is by no means of scientific interest, but is of decisive importance in view of the planning and equipment.

It is endeavoured here to render the experience gained during more than two years operation of a BBC-air conditioner EVX, system Dr. Reichart.

The construction of the phytocabinet is shown in fig. 1. The air conditioning section in which the main conditioner system is found, is separated by an insulated wall from the plant growth section. The plant growth compartment has been fitted into the plant growth section in such a manner that it is enclosed upon all sides by a double - wall room, which can be run separately under a defined and controlled temperature.

A heating in the double - wall room avoids in the case of lower temperatures and high humidity a condense-water formation in the plant growth compartment upon the walls. The lighting system is situated above the plant growth compartment with the special cooling by air system. Arrows indicate the direction of the airflow. Within the plant growth compartment the air is directed through two regulating sliders
