Abstract:
Biochanin A and genistein, two isoflavones with phytoalexinic behaviour naturally present in Genista monosperma Lam. tissues, were tested in vitro against Armillaria mellea Vahl (Kuhn), an important parasite of this species.
The fungus proved to be able to degrade these compounds, when their concentration in the culture substrate was around 10 μmoles.
Phloroglucinol and homogentisic acid appeared to be the main end products of the fungal degradative processes.
