ISHS Acta Horticulturae 375: International Workshop on Cassava Safety

CASSAVA SAFETY AND DEVELOPMENT

Author:   J. Lynam

DOI:   10.17660/ActaHortic.1994.375.36
Abstract:
Cassava's potential in contributing to agricultural development in the tropics is evaluated, followed by a consideration of the role cyanogens from cassava may play in constraining the development of the crop. The direct and indirect costs that the management of these cyanogens impose on production, marketing and consumption of the crop are identified. This leads to an analysis of how toxicity is managed in cassava sub-sectors and an identification of the most appropriate points in the food system for optimal management of cassava cyanogens. This is related to how well buffered households are to exposure to cyanide. The paper concludes that by increasingly bringing cassava into the market economy and the development process, that management of cassava safety will improve.
