| Abstract:
Several essential oils and their components were screened for fumigant activity against two developmental stages (eggs and adults) of stored product insects (Tribolium confusum, Rhyzopertha dominica, and Ephestia cautella) and fungi. A concentration of 1.5 μl/1 air of the most potent compound, SEM76 was enough to obtain 100% mortality of all adult insects after a 24h treatment period. Oregano oil at higher concentrations effectively killed insect eggs. Of all the essential oils screened for fungicidal activity only two essential oils (thyme and oregano) and two of their components (thymol and carvacrol) were active. Differences in sensitivity to the active oils were evident amongst the different insect species and stages. | |
