| Abstract:
World pineapple production was reported by FAO to be 10.6 million metric tons in 1990. Production of pineapple is limited by market development, disease and insect problems, and management skills. Pineapple research and development expenditures on a world wide basis are unknown. In Hawaii, public research and development expenditures have ranged from approximately 0.1 to 0.7 % of the farm gate value of $38 to 100 million from 1970–1990, respectively. Private research and development expenditures currently represent approximately 1.2% of the 1990 farm gate value. In Hawaii research and development expenditures are allocated based on identification and prioritization of issues limiting the production and marketing of pineapple. World research and development should be coordinated in order to best allocate resources to address major issues affecting pineapple production (e.g. mealy bug wilt) and marketing (e.g. low acid fresh fruit clones). | |
