Abstract:
An inventory concerning traditional African hepatoprotective remedies has been compiled, from information published in a number of different reports.
No synthesis of hepatoprotective plants has as yet been undertaken.
This study has brought to light 476 different species used in hepatoprotective medication.
These belong to 105 different families and 301 genera; there have been 1090 mentions of plants for 708 remedies.
An initial interpretation of these results has allowed species to be classified in descending order based on the number of countries in which their use is cited. Senna occidentalis heads the list with 11 countries, followed by Carica papaya, Cochlospermum tinctorium, Combretum micranthum and Morinda lucida. Most often, these plants are widely distributed and their hepatoprotective effect is already well documented.
