Abstract:
The Chinese Society for Horticultural Science is a nongovernmental academic organization.
It is affiliated with the China Association for Science and Technology.
The purposes of the society are to promote horticultural development, enhance the growth of scientific personnel and carry out domestic and international academic exchange to make contributions to the realization of our four modernizations.
The society is involved in the culture, breeding of fruit trees, vegetable crops and ornamental plants, horticultural production storage and processing and landscape designing.
The Chinese Society for Horticultural Science was founded in 1930. In 1934, the society published its first quarterly Acta Horticulturae Sinica.
Its activities were at a standstill during the period of anti-Japanese War.
And after that period it resumed its former name, Professor Zhang Wencai et al. chaired the recovering meeting.
At the meeting, Professor Xu Tianxi, Cheng Shifu of Shanghai member society, Huang Changxian and Li Peiwen of Guangzhou member society and Chen Xixin and Shen Tsuin et al. of Beijing member society were elected to establish local societies for horticultural science.
The society set up relations with the national societies of horticultural science of England, the U.S., France, Canada, India and Pakistan and published the Acta Horticulturae and other periodicals.
After the founding of the People's Republic of China, in August 1951, it started to make preparations for the setting up of the Chinese Society for Horticultural Science.
In August 1956, the inaugural meeting was held in Beijing and the first national council was elected.
The executive officers of the society were as follows: President: Zeng Xianpu, Vice President: Shen Tsuin, Zhang Wencai, Secretary General: Ha Guizeng, Deputy Secretary General: Weng Xintong.
In 1957, it published "Horticultural Journal" and "Landscape Journal".
In July 1960, the second national meeting was held at Xingcheng, Lïaoning Province and the council members were elected; President, Wang Gengsheng, Vice President, Shen Tsuin, Yu Dejun, Yu Dingzi and Zhang Ziming, Secretary General: Zhang Ziming, Deputy Secretary General: Chen Junyu and Zhang Jizheng.
In May 1962, it published "Acta Horticulturae."
In 1966, its activities were stopped by the "Cultural Revolution" and at the same time the publication of "Acta Horticulturae Sinica" was stopped from Vol. 5, No. 2.
In July 1978, The Chinese Association of Agricultural Societies resumed its activities at the National Agricultural Symposium held in Taiyuan, capital of Shanxi Province.
The Chinese Society for Horticultural Science resumed its activity at the same time as an affiliated society.
The third national council was elected as follows: President: Shen Tsuin, Vice President: Zhong Junlin, Yu Dejun, Zengmian, Zhang Wencai, Zhang Zhiming, Zhu Mingkai, Yu Dingzi, Li Jiawen, Li Shuxuan and Wang Juyuan,, Secretary General: Zhang Jizeng, Deputy Secretary General: Chen Junyu and Su Runyu.
