Abstract:
There is great diversity in the organization of Societies for Horticulture within Africa and in the management of professional horticultural affairs.
Most African countries have very few horticultural scientists or professionals engaged in horticulture.
Especially in the smaller countries most such individuals are employed by the government or within a national university and scientific meetings are arranged within a government framework.
Many are employed by multinational companies or have specific bilateral links, either with commercial organizations based outside Africa or with donor agencies, in which case the professional linkages are usually with Europe, the U.S.A. or another highly developed country.
Despite these factors national societies for horticulture do exist in Africa and the number is increasing rapidly.
Replies to a 1990 questionnaire sent to ISHS members throughout Africa provided the following country-by-country information:
Egypt
The Egyptian Society for Horticulture (President - His Excellency Professor Dr.
Y. Wally.
Address: "E.S.H." 14 Gawad Hosny Street, P.O. Box 46-Cairo, Cairo, Egypt) has pride of place within Africa.
It was founded in 1915, has 1200 members and is open to all who are interested in horticulture.
The society publishes its own scientific journal and conference proceedings, holds its own annual convention and organizes exhibitions of fruits, plants and technical and scientific equipment.
It promotes international linkages through ISHS, is officially registered within Egypt and has formal links with the public sector and private industry.
