Abstract:
Gibberellic acid (GA3) and PromalinTM were applied as a pre-plant immersion to tubers of Zantedeschia ‘Galaxy’, a Z. rehmannii (Engl.)-like selection, at 0,25,50, or 100 ppm for periods of 10 seconds, 1 and 30 minutes.
The maximum increase in total flower number with GA3 was at 25 ppm, resulting in a 243% increase and with PromalinTM at 100 ppm resulting in a 469% increase.
Immersion durations of 10 seconds were as equally effective as 1 and 30 minutes, in altering the growth and flowering parameters measured.
Both PromalinTM and GA3 increased the number of primary flowers rather than increasing secondary flower number.
The proportion of malformed flowers was not increased by either Promalin™ or GA3 treatment.
The proportion of shoots producing a lower leaf number below the primary flower was increased with both PromalinTM and GA3. Increasing concentrations of PromalinTM resulted in increased shoot number as well as an increase in the proportion of grade 5 daughter tubers.
It is suggested that the application of both GA3 and PromalinTM influence flowering through a greater proportion of shoots being converted to a floral state at an earlier stage.
The greater effectiveness of PromalinTM resulted from the additional effect of increasing the number of inactive buds stimulated to develop as shoots.
