A general survey of fruiting in the World Collection of the CIDA "Alameda del Obispo", Córdoba, included 133 cultivars in 1987 and 125 in 1988. Ten bearing shoots per cultivar were sampled to record the following data: number of nodes of the previous year's growth, number of inflorescences, number of pistillate inflorescences at full bloom (FB), number of fruits 45 days after FB and at harvest, and weight of fruits at harvest.
The indices level of flowering, pistillate inflorescences, fruit set and fruiting (number of fruits per node and number of fruits per cm of bearing shoot) were calculated.
A step-wise multiple regression analysis of fruiting indices versus level of flowering, pistilate inflorescences and fruit set showed that the latter accounted for 87% and 72% of overall variability in the number of fruits per node at harvest in 1987 and 1988, respectively.
The same indices also accounted for the 76% and 66% of the variability in the number of fruits per cm of bearing shoots for 1987 and 1988, respectively.
However the relative influence of the levels of flowering, rate of pistillate inflorescences and fruit set varied among years evidencing a general mechanism of compensation that operates at fruit set for diminishing the previous differences in the level of flowering and in the intensity of pistil abortion.
