Abstract:
Traditional methods of inter-island shipment of plantains (Musa sp.) by hucksters involves handling on the bunch.
No packaging is used.
High levels of loss and damage are suffered which has prevented market expansion and limited profitability.
This paper presents the methodology and results of an extension programme to encourage use of packaging to reduce losses.
Information on the current handling system, from farm to market is presented.
All participants in the handling chain recognized the high losses incurred but cited operational and financial reasons for not having changed their handling system.
A commercial trial demonstrated that packaging was economically viable and reduced losses by 25%. The paper concludes that although technology may be available and the need to change technology evident, there still remains numerous obstacles to technology take-up that extensionists must circumvent.
