ISHS Acta Horticulturae 252: I International Symposium on the Development of New Floricultural Crops

EVALUATION OF THE GENUS KALANCHOE FOR BREEDING OF NEW CUTFLOWERS AND POTPLANTS.

DOI:   10.17660/ActaHortic.1989.252.14
Abstract:
Since the development of vegetatively propagated cultivars Kalanchoe is one of the major potplants. New potplant types, recently introduced, present different flower types originating from interspecific hybridization. Flower induction in so called drooping bell types is only obtained during short day treatment combined with low night temperature. Improvement of potplant types as well as the development of Kalanchoë as a cutflower is possible using wild species. A wide genetic variation in important characteristics is present in the genus. An evaluation with wild species and F1-hybrids is carried out to select favourable genotypes as parents for interspecific hybridization.
