THE EFFECT OF VARIOUS TREATMENTS ON THE YIELD OF TOMATOES IN RE-USED PERLITE |

| Abstract:
The Perlite system for the production of tomatoes and cucumbers is now commonly used in Scotland and is also becoming increasingly popular in other parts of the world. Growers who use this system are now re-using the perlite for several years thereby cutting down on the expense of replacing the perlite every year. This paper describes the results of experiments carried out in 1984 and 1985 using steam to sterilise the perlite and also the effects of various fungicides, namely Aaterra, Filex and Alliette on the yields of tomatoes grown in second year perlite. Steaming perlite before re-use gave a significant increase in yield even over new perlite. All fungicides reduced the yields as compared to untreated perlite. Aaterra at 60 ppm gave quite a lot of toxicity symptoms. Filex gave satisfactory results at recommended rates. Alliette gave toxicity at recommended rates and suppressed the yields. | |
