Abstract:
In the Netherlands, techniques of growing carnations are improved continuously.
In recent years there have been new developments in:
- the use of substrates, now in nearly 50 ha of mostly standard carnations, to reduce the risk of Fusarium infection.
Types of substrate, water and nutrient supply are mentioned
- irrigation by drip lines, to keep the plants dry and to economise on water consumption
- use of white plastic foil to improve utilisation of available light (reflection) and reduce evaporation
- application of CO2, to stimulate growth in the winter.
Different sources of CO2 and methods of administration are discussed.
