Importance of the cactus pear fruit and the tender cactus stems in Mexico

Abstract:
This review addresses the importance of the cactus pear fruit and the tender cactus stem in Mexico. Mexico is the country with the largest area of cactus pear fruit and tender cactus pear stems in the world, cactus fruit with 45,140 ha, and tender cactus stems with 12,618 ha. The cactus fruit within the fruit occupies the 8th place by harvested area, the 11th place by production, the 17th place by production value (79,746,300 USD) and the 10th place by per capita consumption with 3.62 kg year‑1. The tender cactus stems within the vegetables occupies the 14th place by harvested area, the 8th place by production, the 13th place by production value 124,731,200 USD and the 6th place in per capita consumption with 6.81 kg year‑1. In Mexico, the tender cactus stems are more important than the cactus fruit by production value and per capita consumption.
