Abstract:
Pachypodium brevicaule (Apocynaceae) is a succulent perennial native to Madagascar.
A large number of P. brevicaule plants have been taken out of the country because that species is one of the most popular codex plants.
However, the establishment of seed propagation is essential for P. brevicaule plants to become sustainable horticultural production.
The fruit-setting and seed weight in self-pollination were lower than those of cross-pollination.
But no differences in the pod length and the number of seeds per pod were observed between self-and cross-pollination.
Seeds obtained from self-pollination showed lower seed germination and survival of seedlings than those of cross-pollination.
Seed germination was observed in a range of temperatures from 15 to 30°C, with an optimum temperature of 25°C. Germination and seedling morphology were compared under 25 different wavelength LED lights (405 to 780 nm). Lower germination was observed at 735 and 750 nm.
Seedlings had short and thickened hypocotyl axes at 450 and 470 nm.
In addition, greening was suppressed at 405, 420, and 735 nm.
Cryopreserved P. brevicaule seeds showed high germination ability and the seedlings also showed the same growth as those of non-cryopreserved seeds.
