Abstract:
Nitrogen (N) is often applied in excess in fruit crop nurseries, possibly with negative effects to the environment and the plants being fertilized.
A nursery study was conducted to assess the effects of N rates and frequency of application on the growth of ketembilla (Dovyalis hebecarpa) plants in the nursery.
The treatments were nitrogen rates (0.2 to 1.2 g N plant‑1) applied as drench at two frequencies, every 7 or 14 days.
After 140 days of the first N application, plant height, SPAD values and leaf area were significantly greater in the regimen of 0.4 g of N applied every 7 days.
Increasing N rate or frequency of application did not further enhance ketembilla growth or became detrimental to the plant.
These results may assist in designing rational N fertilization programs for ketembilla in the nursery.
