Abstract:
There are many methods for cultivating leafy vegetables in greenhouses during fall period, two of them (floating hydroponic system and substrate culture) have been used in this study.
The aim was to evaluate a floating hydroponic system (FHS) and substrate culture (SC), for leafy Asian vegetables cultivation, regarding the harvestable biomass production and nutrition value.
Two Asian leafy vegetables were included: two cultivars of Mizuna (Brassica rapa L. subsp. nipposinica Hanelt), ‘Mizuna Grün’ and ‘Mizuna Rot’ and leaf red mustard (Brassica juncea L.) ‘Mustard Giant Rot’. Plant height, the number of leaves per plant, plant yield and dry matter content in plants cultivated on FHS and SC were evaluated.
The vitamin C and total phenolic content (TPC) were determined to evaluate the nutritional value of plants.
The average plant height varied from 10 to 14 cm for ‘Mustard Rot’, around 14 cm for ‘Mizuna Rot’ and from 14 to 20 cm for ‘Mizuna Grün’. At harvest, 28 days after plants were placed on the systems, plants had 4 to 5 fully developed leaves.
Dry matter content was higher in plants from SC (71.5±1.3-78.5±2.6 mg g‑1) compared to the plants from FHS (62.4±1.0-68.5±2.4 mg g‑1). Plant yield at ‘Mizuna Grün’ from FHS was significantly higher (1.4±0.1 kg m‑2) compared to the yield from SC (0.79±0.03 kg m‑2). The opposite effect was found at ‘Mustard Rot’, the yield from SC (1.32±0.04 kg m‑2) was significantly higher than the yield from FHS (0.76±0.4 kg m-2). The vitamin C was significantly higher in all plants cultivated in FHS (21.9±1.7 - 28.2±1.8 mg 100 g‑1 FW) compared to plants from SC (12.3±1.0 - 16.5±0.7 mg 100 g‑1 FW). Cultivation systems had no significant effect on TPC in plants of leafy Asian vegetables.
