| Abstract:
Different storage approaches were tested in 2015-2018 in I.V. Michurin Federal Research Centre (Michurinsk, Tambov region, Russia, 52°53’52”N; 40°29’26”E) with our own breeding black current cultivars ‘Tamerlan’ and ‘Shalunya’. The study goal is to develop an innovative method for extending the storage time of fresh fruits of modern commercial black currant cultivars. Fruits of black currant were harvested in experimental plots planted in 2012. Fruits were stored at a temperature of 0 to 1°C in normal (NA), modified (MA with Xtend® films) and controlled atmosphere (CA). The losses due to gray mold (Botritis cineria), as well as sensory (color, taste, firmness) and biochemical (vitamin C, titric acid, total soluble solids and phenol content) indicators of fruit quality were evaluated. The yield of both cultivars was 2.6 kg bush‑1. The effective storage time is limited in NA to 5-7 days, in MA to 10-15 days and in CA to 45 days or even more. The cultivar ‘Tamerlan’ provides a higher level of keeping quality of fruits at all storage technologies. CA conditions maintained best fruit quality and extended storage time by slowing down fruit development, by inhibiting fungal rot, and by reducing change of color, taste and fruit firmness. The CA method is environmentally friendly and could be used in organic production of black currant. | |
