Abstract:
Natural pyrethrins have long been used as household insecticides, and d-allethrin and prallethrin, which originate from pyrethrin I, are both used extensively in the control of mosquitoes worldwide. Modifications in their alcohol moieties have led to the discovery of [2,3,5,6-tetrafluoro-4-(methoxymethyl)phenyl]methyl (1R,3R)-chrysanthemate (dimefluthrin), which has faster knockdown activity than d-allethrin in mosquito coil formulations. Further modifications to the acid moiety of dimefluthrin revealed that [2,3,5,6-tetrafluoro-4-(methoxymethyl)phenyl]methyl (1R,3R)-norchrysanthemate (metofluthrin) exhibited significant knockdown activity in non-heating devices such as fan vaporizers and paper and resin emanators. I herein report the discovery of these new pyrethroids and their efficacies against several mosquito species.
