Abstract:
Spain is positioned as the sixth largest producer of citrus fruit and the first exporter of fresh fruit worldwide. However the profitability of Spanish citrus orchards is threatened by the globalization of markets which has led Spanish citrus growers to be interested in new cultivars in order to obtain greater benefits, and to be more competitive by improving some aspects of the crop and marketing such as productivity, fruit quality and avoiding the concentration of the supply. This study was carried out to evaluate the yield and fruit quality of ‘Navelina’ and ‘Fukumoto’, two early ripening sweet orange cultivars, in Andalusia (Spain). The experimental field was established in June, 2006, in a randomized block design, and was located in western Andalusia (Huelva), with ‘Carrizo’ citrange as rootstock and ‘Valencia Late Frost’ as interstock, being therefore a double-budded plantation. Several parameters were evaluated during the 2010 season: yield and fruit quality (size, weight, shape, external fruit color, juice content, total soluble solids concentration, total acids concentration and soluble solids/acid ratio). The results showed significant differences between ‘Navelina’ and ‘Fukumoto’ in fruit quality. Thus, ‘Fukumoto’ had more attractive fruit color, while ‘Navelina’ had more rounded fruits, as a result of a higher height. Eventually, ‘Navelina’ and ‘Fukumoto’ produced similar yields.
