| Abstract:
Lotus (Nelumbo) has over 2,500 years of history in cultivation. It is the national flower of India and Vietnam, as well as one of the major traditional Chinese flowers due to its important values in medicine, food, horticulture, religion, culture and art. There are only two living species (N. nucifera and N. lutea), but nearly 2,000 cultivars in Nelumbo. Although the names of most lotus cultivars have been recorded in some Chinese, Japanese, English and Thai monographs, none of which were internationally registered until 2008 and very few have been officially documented by the International Nelumbo Registrars. To promote international lotus registration, germplasm conservation, scientific research, industry, and public education of lotus, an integrative project is being developed at Shanghai Chenshan Plant Research Center of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Chenshan Botanical Garden in China. The International Nelumbo Registration Form was updated in May of 2013. The International Nelumbo Database (IND) or Website (http://www.nelumbolotus.com) is also under development. From the website, the comprehensive information on Nelumbo will be available for free access, including a database of species and cultivars, literature, scientific research, industry information, cultivation, cultural influences, international lotus cultivar registration, important links, lotus forum, micro-blog, and other topics as needed. The goal of this project is to provide an accurate, easily accessible, internationally friendly information and resource platform on Nelumbo for all who are interested in lotus. | |
