CLIMATE DISTRIBUTION IN A FAN AND PAD EVAPORATIVE COOLED GREENHOUSE: A CFD APPROACH

Abstract:
Climate distribution in an evaporative (fan and pad) cooled greenhouse was numerically assessed with the use of a computational fluids dynamic model. For the simulations needs a 3D model was built representing a typical Mediterranean greenhouse (plastic tunnel with arc walls) with a tomato crop, 1.5 m high. The numerical model was first validated against experimental data and then it was used for case studies aiming to improve the design of evaporative cooling systems. In general a good agreement was found between simulated and measured results with their differences not exceed the limit of (4%). An increase of 16.5% of fan airflow rate, leads to a 18% decrease of inside air temperature and to a 22% decrease of air relative humidity. In parallel mean air velocity inside the greenhouse was increased by 15%.
