The investigation on the impact of the application of growth regulators on Indian jujube was conducted at New Orchard of Department of Horticulture, Punjab Agricultural University, Ludhiana during the year 2010-11. ‘Umran’ trees were sprayed with GA3 and NAA each at 10, 20, 30, 40, 50 ppm once in the 2nd fortnight of October and again these sprays were superimposed in the 2nd fortnight of November with the same treatments.
Observation pertaining to fruit drop was recorded at monthly intervals and correlation with the changing climatic condition was analysed.
Yield and physico-chemical characteristics were investigated at harvest.
Both growth regulators had significant influence on the fruit drop and quality characteristics of the treated plants.
The lowest fruit drop of 58.52% was recorded in trees sprayed with 30 ppm NAA. Periodically fruit drop mainly occurred (as high as 60%) from fruit set in October till 31st January but thereafter the fruit drop percent decreased (as low as 17.66%) till harvest.
The highest fruit yield was recorded in trees sprayed with 30 ppm GA3. Higher fruit size and weight were noted with 20 and 40 ppm GA3 and 30 ppm NAA. Higher content of total soluble solids with corresponding with lower acidity content was observed in trees sprayed with 50 ppm NAA and 30 ppm GA3. It was concluded that 30 ppm GA3 or NAA can be effectively used to prevent physiological fruit drop in Indian jujube ‘Umran’.
