The relationship among stock plant etiolation, cutting rooting and their overwinter survival has been studied.
Shoots of etiolated, shaded and light-grown stock plants of deciduous azaleas ‘Ausma’, ‘Vija’ and ‘Skaidrīte’ were used as cuttings.
Talc (control) and 1%, 2% indole-3-butyric acid (IBA) powders in talc were used as experimental treatments.
Numerous anatomical changes have been detected in the etiolated cuttings.
Among them were reduced xylem width, increased width of the cortex as well as widened cambial zone.
These changes and the treatment with IBA have promoted (i) a more rapid development of adventitious roots during the first 3 weeks of all three cultivars; (ii) a formation of greater number of roots per cutting of ‘Ausma’ and ‘Vija’. The success of overwinter survival of cuttings has been cultivar-dependent because only cuttings of ‘Skaidrīte’ have been influenced positively by stock plant etiolation.
The correlation between the overwinter survival of cuttings and starch content in the roots and base of cuttings at the end of growing season was not documented.
Therefore, starch content can not be used as a marker for overwinter survival of deciduous azalea cuttings.
