DOI:   10.17660/ActaHortic.2013.990.20
Abstract:
The aim of this work is to introduce the identification key for phenological growth stages of true service tree (Sorbus domestica L.) and wild service tree (Sorbus torminalis (L.) Crantz.). The phenological activity of both species can be used to monitor the changes of climate and its influences on the ecosystems in Central Europe. Natural distribution and ecological requirements of both species unveil their heat and drought tolerance. The identification key is derived from the BBCH Identification key for phenophases of pome fruit. The phenological growth stages of the true service tree and wild service tree are different from other pome fruits, such as Malus sp. and Pyrus sp. The identification key for both Sorbus species consists of 8 principal growth stages similar to other pome fruits. The main differences are in the principal growth stages: bud, leaf and shoot development. The Sorbus species start their shoot development earlier than Malus sp. and Pyrus sp.
