ISHS Acta Horticulturae 99: Symposium on Substrates in Horticulture other than Soils In Situ

THE USE OF BARK-SLUDGE COMPOSTS AS A SUBSTRATE FOR ORNAMENTAL PLANTS

Authors:   O. Verdonck, D. De Vleeschauwer, M. De Boodt
Abstract:
Papermills are confronted with another waste problem namely the sludge coming from the water purification plant.

In our research we try to compost the sludge together with bark in order to become a product which is usuable as a horticultural substrate. Composts can be made with sludge up to 50 %. After the composting experiments growth trials are carried out as well in research stations as in practice. The test plants were : Fatshedera, Aralia eglantissima, Dieffenbachia exotica, Vriesia splendens and Monstera deliciosa. The growth of these plants is as good in the bark-sludge compost as in the classical substrates so that we can conclude that these new mixtures can be used as horticultural substrates.
