| Abstract:
The nectarine is a species that grows well under Romanian conditions and studies regarding its breeding and the development of new cultivars are advanced. The objectives of nectarine breeding were diversified as: quality of fruit, productivity of trees, ripening time, size, form, colour, flavour, sugar, taste and others. This paper presents new nectarine cultivars, their biological performances and their future for implementation in culture. Cultivars, such as ‘Cora’, ‘Delta’, ‘Romamer 2’, ‘Costin’, ‘Marina’, ‘Liana’, ‘Valerica’ and ‘Anemona’ are improving the Romanian assortment. All of these new cultivars are better than ‘Crimsongold’, both in terms of fruit quality and tree productivity. The best cultivars in comparison with ‘Crimsongold’ (control) are ‘Liana’, ‘Marina’ and ‘Costin’ – for fresh consumption; ‘Valerica’, ‘Anemona’ and ‘Marina’ – for processing. Nectarines contain around seven times more β-carotene than peaches, and have effects against cancer. | |
