A number of lesser-known cultivars of mango exist in India but remain confined only to the orchards of a few individuals and, as a result, these lack popularity.
An extensive survey to identify and collect superior lesser-known cultivars was initiated in 1996 in the commercial mango growing areas of Malda, West Bengal.
Twenty four lesser-known cultivars have been identified as being superior clones through both survey and investigation.
These selected clones were vegetatively propagated and conserved in the Research Station and subsequently studied for their characterization and evaluation by following the descriptor provided by IBPGR. All the qualitative and quantitative attributes of plant, leaf, inflorescence, flower and fruit were recorded.
Wide variation in bearing, maturity, fruit shape, peel colour, pulp colour, pulp weight, beak type, fruit size, fruit weight (132.2-476.7 g), total soluble solids concentration (13.6-22.3°Brix), total sugar concentration (8.25-17.38%), acidity (0.13-0.53%) and ascorbic acid concentration (16.3-85.6 mg/100 g pulp) were observed.
Cluster analysis was used to identify similar cultivars.
Principal component analysis technique was further used to draw a scatter diagram of regression factor scores to identify homogeneous types or cultivars on the basis of a distinct set of characters.
