ISHS Acta Horticulturae 97: VI Symposium on Horticultural Economics

A MODEL FOR DUTCH AGRICULTURE AND HORTICULTURE

Author:   B.M.M. Kortekaas
Abstract:
Up to now economic research into Dutch agriculture has been directed mainly towards developments with regard to separate agricultural products and/or branches of production in agriculture. However, in this partial approach important aspects of the overall picture of Dutch agriculture received insufficient attention. This relates in particular to interaction between the various branches of production in agriculture, which is of great importance to the changes in the composition of the range of products. Furthermore, up to now insufficient attention has been paid to the effect that agricultural products have on each other on the market.

At the end of 1977 a working party (Intermodel) was set up at the AERI with the task of developing an integrated model for Dutch agriculture. This model must comprise arable farming; dairy farming, intensive stock farming and horticulture; for the time being forestry and fisheries are left out of consideration.

The model is to serve as an instrument for:

  1. determining the effects of Government measures on Dutch agriculture;
  2. establishing the reaction of Dutch agriculture to exogenous developments;
  3. determining the autonomous developments within Dutch agriculture.

The "Intermodel" working party consists of 11 members from the various divisions of the AERI. Horticulture is represented in the working party by Messrs. v.d. Plas and Kortekaas. In June 1978 the first interim report was published in which three proposals were worked out regarding the broad approach to the supply model. In June 1979 a second interim report was published, in which the approach chosen for the supply side has been further elaborated and a start made with constructing a market model. In this paper the market model will be described. In a second paper by Mr. v.d. Plas the supply model will be explained.
