ISHS Acta Horticulturae 97: VI Symposium on Horticultural Economics

LONG TERM CHANGES IN SEASONAL DEMAND FOR FRUIT AND VEGETABLES IN THE FEDERAL REPUBLIC OF GERMANY

Author:   H.-G. Dreßler
Abstract:
The distinctive seasonal market fluctuations for fruit and vegetables have led to great efforts (storage, greenhouse, imports etc.) to lengthen the season of various product varieties in order to establish a more balanced supply situation for the market. These measures as well as changes in eating habits have partly led to strong modifications in the formerly customary seasonal demand.

In the analysis presented the long term changes in seasonal demand and their determining causes are pointed out for the most important fruit and vegetable products. Furthermore the attempt is made to indicate the prospects for the future development of seasonal demand.
