DIFFERENCES IN PROFITABILITY IN BELGIAN GLASSHOUSE HOLDINGS

Author:   D. Van Lierde
Abstract:
The causes of differences in profitability have been examined for a certain number of horticultural holdings exclusively dealing with greenhouse vegetable growing, which records are kept at the A.E.I. The profitability is expressed by profit/m2.

The differences in profitability are largely due to the difference in the cropping combination, but the extent to which these different combinations result in differences in profitability varies from one year to another. When studying the differences in profitability of holdings with an identic cropping combination, one notices the differences in returns/m2 particularly affect the profitability. It is also noticed the profit/m2 decreases with the increase of the number of man hours/m2. Costs, farm size and the precocity of the tomatoes affect the profitability only to a small extent.

It was impossible to find out which factors were responsable for the large differences in returns/m2.
